Blog: Dome Stories

Chasing the blues with color

Not for nothing is Chicago known as the Windy City. But in the winter, that wind whips in with Arctic chill. Plus, weather systems stall out and bring prolonged periods of dull, grey overcast skies. Chicago’s winters could wipe the smile from an optimist.

All these factors went into Bill Kindra’s design decisions when building Quad Indoor Sports in Evanston. “People come in here and say, ‘This is fantastic! It’s so vibrant!’”

That’s because the facility’s indoor colors are warm, sunny orange and white. Add some crisp LED lights and bingo. You’ve got instant Welcoming Environment. The uplifting color scheme has made fans of users. “We draw from a 10-12 mile radius and everyone loves it. Yeadon built a fabulous project.”

Big, bold and bright

A typical dome color scheme is blue, green and white. The first 15 feet of wall space need color so balls will be clearly visible.  Kindra knew the orange color upgrade would cost more, but was convinced the community and users would benefit from it. “We wanted something brighter and lighter.”

As it happens, the area high school’s colors are also orange and white. So perhaps this welcoming dome that boosts spirits carries a little school spirit too.
